Most of the time, our blog is used to give visitors to our website educational and useful information about bankruptcy and other areas of law that we engage in. This blog post serves as a warning to those who have filed for bankruptcy or those who may file in the future.
There is a scam that is sweeping the country. Scammers claiming they are attorneys are calling individuals who have filed for bankruptcy and are trying to get those individuals to send money to satisfy debts that were included in the bankruptcy case. What’s worse, these clever con artists are using software to make it appear that the call is coming from their own attorney’s office. DO NOT BE FOOLED!
The threats being made of arrest and other consequences for not immediately sending money are not real. These are scammers who have found a very clever scheme to frighten people into sending them money.
If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately and contact your bankruptcy attorney. Your bankruptcy attorney can then contact the proper authorities and let them know the details of the call and the situation. Most importantly, do not divulge any personal or financial information under any circumstances.
Hopefully, once the word spreads about this scam, the perpetrators will be apprehended and brought to justice for trying to take advantage of individuals who already are going through a very difficult time. Feel free to contact us at Steidl and Steinberg if you have any further questions regarding this very serious matter.
