If you are a senior, or know some seniors who are property owners in Allegheny County, here’s some news you need to know.
There is a little-known property tax relief program in Allegheny County that can save a few bucks for seniors who earn a relatively modest income. But it’s worth checking out.
For applicants in this program, there are three requirements. You must have owned and occupied a primary residence continuously in Allegheny County for the past 10 years. You must be age 60 or older or, if you are married, either spouse must be at least 60.
If you are a widow or a widower at least 50 years old or, if you are permanently disabled between the ages of 18 to 60, you are eligible. You must meet the required age by Dec. 31, 2014 to qualify for tax relief in 2014.
Your gross household income cannot exceed $30,000.00 per year. If you are collecting Social Security benefits or Railroad Retirement Tier I benefits (except Medicare), only 50 percent of that income will be considered.
The program entitles qualified residents to a flat 30 percent discount of the real estate taxes on their property for each year they are eligible. You can also receive a 2 percent discount if you pay your county taxes in full by March 31.
Once approved, you are eligible to receive the 30 percent discount annually as long as you meet the income standard. You will not be required to apply every year.
