I loved growing up in Western Pennsylvania, and I still love it here. From the rivers of Pittsburgh, to the majesty of the Laurel Mountains, to Erie’s marvelous Presque Isle, to the rocks of McConnell’s Mills, there is always someplace wonderful to explore.
The people of Western Pennsylvania are honest and hard working. There is none of the hustle and bustle of New York or the slickness of Philadelphia or the artificial elegance of Miami Beach. People here work hard and play hard and pay the bills when they come due.
That is why it is so hard for people to come to the conclusion that they need help with their finances. It’s simply not the way they grew up. Our parents always paid the bills on time, no matter what, or so we thought. They would be horrified if they knew we could not pay ours, so bankruptcy has never been a thought for many of those here around us. Even if it is the last resort, even if it is offered in the Old Testament, which it is.
Bankruptcy is not just a single concept. There are different types of bankruptcies, and some of them allow you to pay back your bills. People say they want to pay back my bills, so they ask why get the bankruptcy court involved? The reason why is, in many cases, you can’t do this alone.
A potential client came in to see me recently and the couple shared almost $40,000 in credit card debt. They made decent money, so they couldn’t figure out why they didn’t have enough money left to handle car repairs, or things the kids needed. The minimum payments on the credit cards alone were over $1,200. 00. They were not making any progress on the bills, as most of the money was going to interest.
I suggested they look into a Chapter 13 Reorganization under the Bankruptcy Code. Under Chapter 13, they would be able to reduce their payments dramatically, in this case by half, and still get the credit cards 100 percent paid off. This might seem impossible if you do the math but, by rearranging their payments on their vehicles and by eliminating all of the interest, we were able to do just that.
