Four attorneys from Steidl and Steinberg met with a large group of property owners recently during a seminar conducted at Washington’s Citizens Library. The group came armed with plenty of concerns and even more questions. They are worried about their taxes, and confused about the process.
And they are angry.
It’s okay to be angry. But it’s more important to be focused, and what homeowners in Washington County have to focus on is getting their property assessed at the correct value.
We can’t tell you what your taxes are going to be in 2017, as the county won’t set the final assessment numbers until late November. The budgets for taxing bodies (county, municipality, school districts) are estimates at best. We do not know at this point what the millage will be for the taxing agencies.
But what you can do is make sure your property has the correct assessed value. Then you know you will be paying your fair share.
